Fall Recipes

Do you tend to get colds and flus in Winter? Preventing sickness starts now with what you are eating! During the summer the body tends to accumulate heat. This heat will turn to dryness in the Fall and in Winter will irritate the sinuses. This dryness in the sinuses will make the mucus membranes react by producing more mucus. This can lead to colds, flus, and bacterial or viral infections. It is important to eat seasonally and regularly cleanse the body to get rid of excess build up of toxins (ama) in the body. Your way to heal is through what you eat!

Two great recipes for fall:

~Stewed Apple~ Warm up 1 tablespoon ghee in a pan. Cut up 1-2 apples, pears or peaches and place them in the warm ghee. Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1 teas cardamom, some grated ginger, a handful of raisins and some chopped nuts. Cover and allow to cook for 5-10 min. You may need to add water. Serve alone or over rice, quinoa or oats

~Beet Red Lentils~ Servings: 6

  1. 2 cup red lentils, rinsed & soaked for 30 minutes

  2. 2 beets, peeled & chopped into bite sized pieces

  3. 3 cups water

  4. 2 teaspoons coriander

  5. ¼ teaspoon hing (asafoetida)

  6. ½ teaspoon ground turmeric

  7. 1 teaspoon sage

  8. ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  9. 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Combine soaked lentils, beets, and water in a large pot. Toast the coriander dry in a skillet. Stir in hing to the coriander. Then add this, along with turmeric, sage, pepper, and lemon juice, to the pot. When at a boil, reduce heat & let simmer 45 minutes to an hour, until it is thickened.
