Leaky Gut Syndrome and Healing Your Gut

Leaky gut is defined as increased intestinal permeability. This means that the tight junctions in the gut, which control what passes through the lining of the intestine, don’t work properly. This leak could let substances enter into the bloodstream that normally would not be allowed in the blood. Once these tight junctions get broken apart, you have a leaky gut. Toxins, microbes, undigested food particles, and more can escape your intestines and travel through your body via your bloodstream. Your immune system marks these as “foreign invaders” as pathogens and attacks them.

Some causes of Leak Gut Syndrome:

• Food sensitivities (dairy, gluten) • Excessive sugar and processed foods • Too much alcohol • Infections (bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic) • Medications (ibuprofen, NSAIDS, steroids, antibiotics, aspirin, long-term contraceptives, acid-reducing drugs • Toxins (heavy – metal, pesticides, BPA, phthalates, etc.) • Chronic stress

The symptoms often associated with Leaky Gut Syndrome are: Digestive issues (gas, nausea, bloating), food sensitivities, fatigue, muscle or joint pain, headaches, skin issues (eczema, acne, or other rashes), elimination problems, and weight gain.

Leaky Gut syndrome has been linked with many conditions such as, MS, asthma, chronic fatigue, IBS, Rheumatoid Arthritis, psoriasis, and bowel cancer, just to name a few.
